David M. Dror founded (2007) and Chaired (2007-2017) the Micro Insurance Academy (New Delhi), which grew to be the world’s leading technical advisory in microinsurance to grassroots groups. He also founded Social Re Consultancy (Pvt.) Ltd. (SRC), a Private Limited Company incorporated under India’s Companies Act in 2007 in New Delhi.
He has 35+ years of professional research and management experience.
He served as Hon. Professor of health economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam (Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management) and earlier at Univ. d’Auvergne, Clermont-Ferrand. Before that, he served as a senior specialist (health) within the ILO’s Social Security Dept (1982-2003).
Before the ILO, David was a director (1975-1981) within the Manufacturers’ Assoc of Israel, leading the entire private sector in collective bargaining agreements on wages, labor conditions, pensions, and social security.
He has published several books and over 95 papers in refereed journals, acts as guest editor and reviewer for high-impact journals, delivers keynote addresses in professional meetings, and regularly interacts with civil society organizations active at the grassroots level in several countries. His research analyzes the low insurance uptake by persons in the informal sector in low-income countries. It develops effective ways to encourage insurance uptake at the base of the pyramid among informal sector and rural populations. David was a founding member of the CGAP Working Group on Microinsurance, now called the Microinsurance Network.
Since his retirement, he has mentored young professionals selected by the Kofi Annan Foundation as changemakers.
